Dear Andy, Yours is a model site, better than most. I stumbled on it while seeking a branch of the Elkington family and immediately regretted not visiting Dursley last month while touring Gloucestershire in search of another family. An Ernest Way Elkington of Dursley toured Canada about 1905 and wrote a book about it.
Best wishes,
John

We spent two golden months in Dursley in 1997 while I did a locum at the Taberbacle. What a joy it has been to meet many of the Dursley folk out here - most recently Michael Symes and his wife when they visited us in Queenstown.
Thanks for your site.

Great to see places and names of people I recognise. Quite a 'blast from the past'.

Do you by any chance have a brother called Dave who lived in Slimbridge or thereabouts in the 1950's?

Hi there,
I am trying to find out any info about Thomas Phelps born in Dursley 1828, His wife's name was Sarah but I have very little other info. He was in the 1841 census and 1851 census in Dursley but in the 1861 census he had moved to Bridgend, South Wales. If anyone can help I shall be grateful.
Bye Judith

Andy, this is not just a wonderful website - it is the future of history. Thanks for your work and the insights and memories it renders.
Personally, I am looking for my heritage. I come from the Hancock's of Upper Poole Road but am related to the Harris's and Sutton's also. Any information someone might have concerning my grandfather (Arthur Charles Hancock) and his relations, would be much appreciated.

Can anyone give me any more info on the brewery??

Would any one know the whereabouts of Vicky Palin. I think she was at Leeds University around 1991-1994.
Lindsay Reeves Tuesday, 16 September 2008 22:00
Hi there, if it's the Vicky Palin I know she would be about 36? She's one of my sister's best friends (they've known each other since school), she's married and lives in Wotton Under Edge (about 5 miles down the road), married with 3 young children. Shall I send her your best wishes?

I am trying to recall childhood rhymes, and wondered if there is someone who remembers "Dimple Dumple Daisy was a widow. On her husband's grave one night she sat..." and "As she tripped from cask to cask..." I would love to know the rest of the words to pass along.
Val Hogan Sunday, 9 November 2008 15:33
Hi, have you tried a site called the sandman? It gives you many many childhood rhymes. I will leave it for you to check. I hope you get lucky.

Have been trying to find out about Sue Pardoe who lived at Woodmancote, Dursley. Last known a few years ago when her husband Dave sadly passed away. Sue worked at the National Trust (Chedworth Roman Villa) - have heard recently on the 'grapevine' that she has also passed away? Could anyone please find out or give me details on how to find out? Much appreciated.

Well done your site is very informative.
I have never left Australia, but reseaching Dursley, after finding my Great-great grandparents (Woodwards and Downs) came from here. It looks like a beautiful area I wonder why they would have left such a pretty and historical area.

What a great quality site. Having lived in Dursley for eight years I have found the town and some of its people mourn the days gone by & don't have as much hope for its imminent regenerating future as they should. So good to see positive promotion and comments about this easy going town.
Andy Friday, 11 July 2008 22:26
Hi Sophie. I agree with you, things have changed certainly but there are still plenty of positive things about the town and much to look forward to.

I lived in Dursley in 1989 with the Waterson Family for six months. Went to Rednock school and also spent some time with friends at the Happy Pig pub.
Today I decided to see if I could find something on the web about Dursley. Amazing, I almost cry to see photos of this beautiful town since all the good memories came back to my mind.
Thank you! Ana

Having lived and worked in Dursley in the 1970s, I used to drink in one or two pubs in Dursley town centre, but I can't remember the names. Can anyone help? I believe the landlord's surname in one was a Mr Jones.
Andy Tuesday, 17 June 2008 22:19
Have you tried looking at http://www.dursleyglos.org.uk/html/dursley/pubs/pubs.htm to see whether you can recognise any of the pubs?

I was brought up in Dursley, but left at the age of 21 in 1967. In my dotage I've taken up model trains again and am trying to do the Dursley branch line. Your photo collections have been a joy and helped tremendously!
It was a great place to be brought up and the photos bring back so many memories. Trainspotting at Coaley and the sun always shined.......Haha!

Hi Mike did your father have a jewelry store in Parsonage St? If so I knew him and your mom & sister, you were just a young boy then!!!!!
|
Graham Scott Sunday, 12 July 2009 06:23
Mike - I saw you mentioned in another posting here. Like Julie, I wonder if your parents owned the jewelry store. If so, you and I were classmates at Dursley Grammar. Do you remember Robert Hill, Ken Smith, Tony Bray, Susan Peacy, Anne Leonard, Margaret Watkins and many others? I see you are in CA. I'm in TN.

Very interesting site. I came to it as I was checking out some references from my father's war memoirs - he was in Dursley in about 1942 for a drill and duty course (preparatory to officer training) which was run in the town. He and the other 18 course participants were billeted in a large attic above a pub - as I can see that there are rather a lot of pubs in Dursley I guess it will be hard to identify which, but if anyone has any more information on this that would be interesting. Several of the other participants were German and Austrian refugee.
