The broads authority have purchased 37 met of quay heading at The Berney Moorings quite close to the windmill. There will be free 24 hour hour moorings for boaters and eventually will have mains electric hook up points...Dave R

I am an ex-Railwayman and at one time was part of the Norwich Station Servicing Team, which cleaned and maintained all the unmanned stations on the lines from Norwich to Lowestoft, Great Yarmouth and Sheringham, whilst also being the Yarmouth lampman. I was the lampman 3 days a week and with the servicing team the other 2 days.

It was my job to clean and refill the oil lamps in the semaphore signals at Brundall, Acle, Lingwood and Great Yarmouth and the lamp on the station at Berney Arms. As far as I know I was the last person to do the lamp at Berney Arms because there was a timetable change in about 1993 or 1994 so that trains would no longer stop there after dark and I had to withdraw the lamp. In those days it was accessed by the metal ladder shown in one of your pictures. I would have to get a train from Yarmouth, taking a fresh lamp with me, and swap them over when we got there. Also on the sevicing team was Ivor Broom who had done the lamps at Berney Arms when there was a station building and signal box there. The station had no running water so fresh water had to be delivered by train every day. I forget the name of the people who lived there then.

Apparently there used to be more houses on the marshes in those days and I'm told that the lady was the post mistress and ticket seller and her husband used to be the signalman and also delivered post to outlying houses by rowing boat. I hope this is of interest.

Been back again this season by boat. Had a week on the Broads and stopped off on the way to the Southern Broads and again on the way back up. John and Tracy were as welcoming as ever and Hubby had 2 mixed grills in 1 week!

Loved all the pictures. I went there on a school trip in 1977 - (underage drinking in a pub with no road access - surely not!) and am planning a return trip to the Broads with family when the Berney Arms will be a definite attraction.

Great website, unique place. I had the pleasure of visiting in 2007 with Crookham Travel when about 50 people crowded the station platform. Arriva had been notified in advance and rescheduled the train by 3 minutes to allow time for us to board! My pictures of the occasion are at http://www.crookhamtravel.co.uk/Galleries/MA_2007_Norwich/CROOKHAMTRAVELRAR123/index.html

We hope to return next year, arrriving by water. Best wishes to all, Mike.

My parents owned the pub at Berney Arms during my high school years (Approx. 1954 - 1960). I took the train to Great Yarmouth every day for school. Great memories of the place which was not very different then except more buildings!

Berney Arms featured in a program called 'Heart of the Country' shown on the Country Channel here in New Zealand last night. Naturally, with the web site having been mentioned, I just had to visit! Excellent program and excellent web site smile

It always used to be seasonal but I'm not sure of the dates. Try phoning the pub direct on 01493 700303 to check.

Watched on Countrywise earlier this evening. Have been to Great Yarmouth on the train many times and never noticed the station before. What a wonderful area. Next time will definitely go visit Berney Arms as well when I am in the area. Nice interesting website too. smile

Andy Thursday, 14 May 2009 20:23
Hi there. Thanks for the message, I didn't realise the programme was being televised until I saw the messages come in. There are two lines between Norwich and Gt. Yarmouth and most trains go via Acle rather than Berney Arms but the station is easy to miss anyway!

Just seen this interesting feature on Countrywise (think Tony Francis once visited it on Heart of the Country also). What a unique place!
