I have become fascinated with this area after reading "Coot Club" by Arthur Ransome. This book contains wonderful and atmospheric descriptions of the area. Do read it if you haven't already done so. Berney Arms also features in it.

The pub reopened with a new leaseholder on Saturday 20th April. He hopes to stay open through as much of the winter as possible too!
Andy Monday, 29 April 2013 18:41
Good to see. Thanks for the update - let's hope it stays open!

Andy Thursday, 2 May 2013 08:10
Opening hours are believed to be 11am to 11pm, 7 days a week but I suggest phoning the pub on 01493 700303 to check on this and the availability of meals.

Great site. However would have been good to know it was recently closed and now more importantly re-opened. Long way to go to find out. Let's hope it stays open a long time.
Andy Monday, 29 April 2013 18:40
The website is really a local history website and has no connection to the pub so it really relies on information from visitors who leave messages in the guestbook about its current status. Luckily there are plenty!

Hi Andy - great site you have here. I have a couple of photos from a cold weekend in 1989 I'd be happy to share with you if you're interested. Also happy to recall less stressful times.

Can anyone advise the opening times for the Berney Arms please? Somewhere I saw mention that said that it was closed in the "Winter months". We intend to walk from Acle to Yarmouth on the Weavers Way & take the train back to Acle & it would be nice to have a pint [or two] at the half way point. Intended walk date is 29th Sept 2012
Thanks
Phil R

Hi Phil
You really need to call them direct on 01493 700303 as things have changed over the years and I don't know what the current situation is.

Thanks for that - I'll give them a call during the week

We did the walk although it was a circular one based at Halvergate. Super pub & welcoming owners - they loved the four dogs that we brought in! Just as we left a boatfull of "pirates" turned up - we should have hung around to see the reaction of the pub!!

Wow, what a trip down memory lane. I hope you get lots more pictures to put on here! I've been trying to find a map of Gorleston in 1950's - 1960's but can't find one for sale anywhere. If anyone can guide me I'd be very grateful.

Me and family are thinking about coming here via the train from Norwich. We've also heard about boats to Berney Arms - any info about that?
Andy Friday, 17 February 2012 21:39
There used to be a trip boat from Yarmouth to Berney Arms during the summer months but I'm not sure if that still happens. Tourist Information may know more.

Nice site. Visiting as my family are local:mother was born in Wickhampton & father in Reedham. I also have railway connections: my grandfather, Walter (Tiny) Powles was head porter at Reedham & later stationmaster at Yarmouth Vauxhall.
