We visited Berney Arms Pub on 11th September, my 60th birthday, on the final leg of the 60-mile Weavers’ Way Walk. A charmed day obviously, as I see that this was the day that the planning application was turned down to convert it into a house. Having planned the walk for some time, I was disappointed to think that the pub would be closed, so imagine my delight when I discovered that it had reopened again for the summer. I no longer live in Norfolk, but feel it would be a great tragedy if this pub was to close for good.

Yarmouth Advertiser on Thursday 29th October has a piece about the pub. CAMRA want to have the pub listed as a special community building allowing locals to bid for its ownership.

Hi... will you be open for food and drinks from October 17th 2015...??
Thanks

You need to call the pub directly as this website has nothing to do with the pub.

The Berney Arms has been open for two weeks serving food and drink. The owner has applied to the Broads Authority for permission to change the inn into a private dwelling.

The wife and I caught the train for Yarmouth and visited the Berney Arms yesterday, unfortunately still closed and up for sale. Really enjoyed the walk back to Great Yarmouth with the dogs, and the weather was glorious. Well maintained pathways and kissing gates.

The Berney Arms pub is still up for sale. Let's hope some one takes it over and gets the pub going again soon

We went there twice, by boat, last week in July and first in August. The couple running the place told us the lunch time rushes had been so good that they were looking at keeping the place open throughout the year. Good food and beer but, sadly, all the old atmosphere had gone.
A friend of mine, who goes there every year on a university reunion, made his usual pilgrimage just over a week ago. Found it as described below. Closed signs in all the windows.
Here's hoping someone else takes it on soon. They usually do!
Mind you, it was always busier when the mill was open. Now that too is locked up and looking sad.

There is now a For Sale sign at the pub. It has an asking price of £230,000 and has been listed by TW Gaze.

Went there Sat 23rd - we often walk from the station to Berney Arms, then on to the Ship at Reedham and the Nelson.
Sorry to have to tell you Berney Arms is CLOSED, so is the Nelson, such a shame.
Recession over is it Cameron?
Andy Monday, 25 August 2014 16:03
I was there the week previous to your visit and it was definitely open - good food and beer. Joe in the pub certainly indicated that the pub would be open throughout the season so perhaps this was a one-off. Not sure what time you visited though.
|
Les Monday, 25 August 2014 16:43
Andy the time we visited is irrelevant, the pub is CLOSED, SHUT, NOT OPEN. And as the person above confirms, up for sale at £230k.
|
Andy Monday, 25 August 2014 17:03
I understand what you said the first time Les. For all I knew though you could have gone there at 9am so the time isn't completely irrelevant - unless there was a notice stating a permanent closure which you didn't say. My point was that that it was open when I visited a week earlier and the landlord indicated it would remain open all season. Obviously something changed since my visit though as detailed in Paul and Sheila's post. Let's hope someone buys it and it reopens soon.

I have become fascinated with this area after reading "Coot Club" by Arthur Ransome. This book contains wonderful and atmospheric descriptions of the area. Do read it if you haven't already done so. Berney Arms also features in it.

The pub reopened with a new leaseholder on Saturday 20th April. He hopes to stay open through as much of the winter as possible too!
Andy Monday, 29 April 2013 18:41
Good to see. Thanks for the update - let's hope it stays open!
|
Andy Thursday, 2 May 2013 08:10
Opening hours are believed to be 11am to 11pm, 7 days a week but I suggest phoning the pub on 01493 700303 to check on this and the availability of meals.

Great site. However would have been good to know it was recently closed and now more importantly re-opened. Long way to go to find out. Let's hope it stays open a long time.
Andy Monday, 29 April 2013 18:40
The website is really a local history website and has no connection to the pub so it really relies on information from visitors who leave messages in the guestbook about its current status. Luckily there are plenty!
