WORLD WAR 2 IN CAM/DURSLEY
Having watched the BBC programme about Shepton Mallet from Victoria times etc., last week was about the war years, which made me wonder whether Cam and Dursley had air raid shelters or if everyone sat under a table or in the cupboard under the stairs. Both my parents are no longer with us and I cann...

Re: Daisy Phillips and Fredrick Maggs
My father's name was Walter Maggs, the only son of Daisy Phillips and Fredrick Maggs. I didn't know Daisy Phillips had brothers and sisters, but after my grandfather died in his early 40s, she married again to a man called "Tibby", don't know his surname. My Mum and Dad never mentioned his...

Re: Kingshill House
Thank you for that information - now I know where I was born.
You never think to ask questions of your parents until you no longer have them with you.

Kingshill House
Does anyone know the history of Kingshill House
I was born in a Nursing Home at Kingshill in the 40's and wonder if Kingshill House could have been used as a Nursing Home during the war.
If not, was there another building in Kingshill that was used as a Nursing Home?

Ex Employee
I worked at Listers for over 23 years. I grew up with many of the Lister employees, having gone to school with a lot of them. In the earlier years nearly all employees were from Dursley or the surrounding villages. It was Company custom of the Lister family to employ complete families if possible. I...

Re: Dursley Modern School (Highfields)
Thanks kriskros I remember Mr Ward now, he also taught me English I also face the pillowcase ends to face the window (or to the side of the bed, never facing in), but I didn't know before where I got that from. What do you have to do to qualify for being invited to Lister Petter's Christmas Dinner I worked at Lister's for over 23 years. I am 65 years I don't mind paying for the privilege but would just like the opportunity to meet up with fellow workers who I have not seen since leaving in 1992. A lot of t...

Re: Workhouse Boulton Lane
We hear so much about "credit crunch" at the moment but life in our grandparents' lifetime was very hard. My mother's mother died in childbirth, there were seven children. My mother was adopted. Her younger brother was brought up by the elder sisters. One of her sisters had severe arthriti...

Workhouse Boulton Lane
Does anyone have any knowledge about the Workhouse. My father lived at Hungerhill when he was a child and told me that people entering the Workhouse had to be pennyless so any money they had they used to put it in the wall along the Slad. All the children in the area knew about this practice so woul...
