Re: WORLD WAR 2 IN CAM//DURSLEY

There were two air raid shelters at Upper Cam, on the small green between what was Champion's shop in the triangle and the farm.

Re: Grace family in Dursley circa 1800

I went to the Grammar School in Dursley in the late 50's, and there was a Leslie Grace in the same year, she lived at The Croft.
Her Father, Sidney, was my father's best man when he married in 1937.

Re: Mawdsley's stories

While I was at Mawdsley's they still had personnel officers. One of them, a few years after leaving, was murdered and became the subject of a televised reconstruction.

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

There was a Hiram Hague who died 30 June 1879 in Istanbul. Was this Major Hague's father? The exit from the garden via the archway to the meadow is shown on the 1903 map. I believe that the part wall to the right of the tower photo is the end wall of what I earlier called cow sheds, but I've spoken ...

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

The entrance "big enough to get a horse and cart through" was probably the arched entrance to the garden which I referred to earlier. This was off to the left of the photograph. I can't remember a round building at all, even the photo that shows one doesn't stir any memories.

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

It's sad to see the tower in such a mess. My memory tells me that what this photograph shows is the building up to roof level and that the castellations surrounded the flat open roof area. I was able to talk to several of my cousins yesterday, one lived on the estate with my Grandfather and the othe...

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

There was a Hiram Hague Winterbotham (born 1 May 1908, died 13 dec 1990) who was a manager and a director of the Textile Dept of Dartington Hall Ltd
and also a director of Dartington Press 1938-1939. More on their website. Is this the two year old son on the 1911 census?

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

I have been talking to a friend whose grandfather was also a gardener at Major Hague's. He lived with his grandfather in the same cottage as my grandfather, leaving to move to Cam. William Browning moved in as it became vacant. This was about 1944/5. The details we each remember seem to be the same....

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

The archway I was referring to did not lead to the tower, it was under the wall leading to the tower at the same level as the cattle sheds, and about where the trees in front of the sheds are , it gave access to the garden from the meadow . I can't remember the archway that appears from the photo to...

Re: Upper Cam Girls Church of England School

I went to Upper Cam Girl's School from 1947 to 1949 (the Infant's class was mixed). The Head Mistress was Miss Hayden, she married a Mr Tucker, a farmer from Upper Cam.

Re: Mawdsley's stories

I started as an apprentice at Mawdsley's in 1960 as an armature winder and electrical fitter. We were given good basic training on everything from Blacksmith to final testing. They made electrical motors and generators for a wide range of goods and were well known for their military contracts. Recen...

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

Thanks Rich, it's nice to know that at least some of my memories are real. I'm afraid that no family photographs survive showing anything of the estate, only one fuzzy shot of my grandfather coming back from milking down the farm. The tower was at the end of what could be called a stone rampart, lea...

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

When you go on some modern quiz shows and are asked a question, you often, in your own mind, know the answer for sure. BUT when you are then presented with a choice of answers you start to doubt your memory. It's a bit like that with Major Hague's sons, I only believed that there were two because of...

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

I thought Major Hague had two sons, but I never met them. One of them ran a hotel in St. David's in Pembrokeshire. I understood that the estate at some point was in the ownership of the sons and that their father continued to live at Norman Hill. When the two fields were sold off for the Kingshill E...

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

I've just joined the discussions this week. My grandfather, William Browning, was the last gardener living in one of the cottages attached to Norman Hill house. Between the end of the second world war and the early sixties, myself, my sister and several cousins spent many hours around the estate. I ...
