Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

Helen, It looks like me, Dave and Andy will be going to look at the site to try to solve the mystery, From what Info you and others have given and what I have seen, I'm pretty sure the tower or part of it is still there! Once that's established we will know exactly where the estate stood!

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

Hi Helen, Thanks for that! I was up, on, and around that wall today, so there was a path in between the walls, only the path and outer wall remains, the inner wall is virtually gone. Well there's much stonework littered about the place, I think I have found what's left of the tower, it fits in nicel...

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

Do you want to meet up and I can show you??? I can see from your second photo exactly where it is (or maybe was) and it's by Holywell Rd, your 1st pic gives the illusion the tower is wrongly in the middle of the field!! There are 2 structures in your 1st photo in the far right of your pic. One is I ...

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

Andy, I have been on and around the wall going up to the tower (visible in your pic). It's roughly 100ft long and the last 9ft of the wall has been added on, you can see by the mortar, and the fact it protrudes approx 5 inches from the main wall and joins to the the longer wall on the other side (co...

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

Andy, If you look at (Google maps Dursley Cam) and zoom in to Norman Hill, you will see the wall at the top of the gardens of Holywell Rd/Woodview Rd which is also the wall at the bottom of the gardens of Parklands. You can follow it from where the castle was, for me that looks pretty much on the mo...

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

Hi Dave, Did you read my earlier post? Both of the walls that were joined to the castle are still there, one runs through 12 gardens between Holywell Rd and Parklands Rd. The house I read somewhere was built in the 1880's and that ties in with they're family records, but must say that the map does n...

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

Hi, if you're talking about the orchard with a stream at the bottom, it was used for a toboggan a long long time after then! So was the castle round or square? Only someone mentioned it being round but looks square on the pic, I believe there are some remains of it buried under a tangle of undergrow...

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

Andy, I have been to an Address in Holywell road (directly behind the tower on your picture) and up the top of their garden is a tall brown stone outer wall, on the other side is where the Tower was, from the other side you can't see much evidence of the tower cos of dumped rubble and deep undergrow...

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

Although, looking at the map and comparing it to the photo (if i've got the alignment right) on the photo it shows a stable type building attached to the outside wall and tower and it looks to be that stable shown on the map, although no tower is shown on it. I am no map reader, so what do the cross...

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

Glad you joined in Ian, Thanks for that, It's strange that so little info is available about the estate, as the Winterbothams were important employers to Dursley for around for 100 years. Hi Andy, think you're right about the wall not being on the map. It has to be said though, the detail is lacking...

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

And so that suggests that the Castle folly was built at the same time as the wall or added on later using the same materials as the wall (so it blended in.)

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

Dave, I agree that it's a bit odd that they used red brick for the house and brown stone for the wall, (but its not unusual). If you look at Andy's pic the wall seems to go right round to the front of the house. It looks purpose built for the house and I'd wager that the whole estate was surrounded ...

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

I was also told (by my dad's friend who used to play down there) that at the bottom of the tower was a door which came out on a lower level, below the estate. I don't know if you can confirm this Dave but this would be a short walk to the cricket field and to the mill.
