Re: Information - Heslop

:) Hello Julie, Thanks for the up-date! My puzzle is my dad left the army to come to Dursley from, as far as I know, Aldershot Garrison. My mother used to work there as a NAAFI girl! My parents as I say married in Stroud and I was born the following year in 1938! I've always understood our first add...

Old copies of the Dursley Gazette

Is there a web site for copies of the Dursley Gazette in the 1940's and 1950's?

My parents, Roland & Christina Heslop, married at Stroud Registrar Office in May 1937! On their marriage Certificate it shows their address as 141 Highfields and witnesses as J.E. Workman and C.S.D. Workman. Does anyone have any information of this Address as I always thought we lived at 1 Highf...

Re: US soldiers in Dursley prior to D-Day

Sorry Andy, My last post was all I could remember about the Americans. Living in the Highfields estate and being only 5/6 at the time it seemed to me the Americans were there one day and gone the next - no marching or even the sound of vehicle movement gave the game away. Some security that!!!!

Re: Lister's Workman's Club

Thanks for the up-date on the Richings. Molly was at least 3 or 4 years older than the other two! Good to hear that Barry is still knocking about - don't think he will remember me! Pauline may well remember me from when she was at "The Odeon". I'm afraid I have no recollection of the Phill...

Re: Lister's Workman's Club

We lived next door to the Richings at No.1 Highfields Approach until 1948, when moved to Long Street! I remember Wally Richings and his wife had 3 children, Molly, Barry and Pauline. I used to knock about with Barry, who I think was a year or two older than me. I think Pauline was about my age and I...

Re: Lister's Workman's Club

Yes, my mam was very small - surprised you remember her and not my dad! Neither two were local; Dad was from Bishop Auckland in Co.Duham and mam was born in Cork, Ireland! I'm now 74, a grandfather with 7 grandchildren!!!

Re: US soldiers in Dursley prior to D-Day

I was living with my mother (Dad away in the war) when the Americans were in town. I remember they had small tents with red crosses laid out on the field by the brook, just off the Uley Road! I rememnber two of these Americans threatening to throw me in the brook - reason unknown! I also remember ch...
