Travelling on the branch

Did you travel on the Dursley branch line to or from Coaley Junction? If so what can you remember of the stations, the line or the journey?

Re: Who remembers any of the railway staff?

Thanks for that Dave. You must be referring to Ernie Carpenter who was a train driver on the branch-line for many years. I have some pictures of him somewhere driving the engine, Andy.

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

Attached is a picture of part of the farm on the Norman Hill estate. I believe the lady in the picture is Joan Tipper. Not sure of the year though. Andy

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

Thanks for the last post, very interesting. I am intending to check out the Gazette archives, as well as the Glos. Archives (Record Office) at some point to verify some things so we'll see what turns up. Cheers Andy

PS - I'll contact you separately about Ted Tipper.

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

Intending to go this afternoon (Saturday 5th March). Would prefer 4.30pm if possible, meet outside police station. Is that OK with you, Rich, as well?
Let me know ASAP. Andy

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

I agree it does seem to be case closed for identifying the tower, thanks for yours, and everyone else inputs too. I'm still going to get up there to see it for myself though. You can see a footpath clearly on the map, between two of the houses on Holywell Road. The path seems to be a direct route be...

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

Here you go, a merged old (1903) and new (1985) map showing the old house and garden against the new roads. The wall is where you said it is Rich and the red dot is around where the tower was. It looks like there could be some remains on that spot! Looks good, what do you think? Andy PS - the blue d...

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

Holywell Road wouldn't have existed of course when the house was present so it's probably difficult to relate the two together without maps of then and now.

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

Hi Rich. I've enlarged a section of the photo, sharpened it as far as I can and marked it up with what I believe are the square and round 'towers'. Is that what others think too? Hopefully that helps to make sure we're talking about the same thing anyway. I would be fine to meet up with you and Dave...

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

Maybe what I think is the tower in my first photo is not correct. Are you able to mark up a copy of the photo and repost it. If not, I'll do it and add it here later so at least you can see what I thought it was. Yes, I did mean the middle of the Norman Hill playing field which seems to include most...

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

Hi Rich. I can see I need to do the map overlay, possibly with the photograph as well to see how things compare. I've checked Google maps too and I can possibly see how some of the wall may be part of that on the photo but the scale still doesn't seem right to me. The actual position of what I think...

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

Hi Rich. I'm struggling to see how any walls along Holywell Road could be the same as that connecting to the 'castle' in my earlier picture as the scale seems wrong to me. I can't see how Holywell Road could be directly behind the castle in the picture as Holywell Road is about halfway between Tilsd...

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

I thought you'd like to see this extract from a 25 inch to 1 mile map from 1903 showing Norman Hill House. I'm not convinced the wall or tower exists on it. What do you think? Andy
