Re: The Ball family from Cam

I can't add much information but I do have a couple of photos which feature members of the Ball family circa 1901. The names mentioned include Amy, Ethel, Joseph, Vera and Emma. However the Joseph shown is around 50-60 and is said to be the Landlord of the Railway Inn in Cam so he cannot be the same...

Re: John Bennnett c1818-1856 Cam

It's certainly a possibility, as it's only 25 miles or so from Cam. Where did Hannah come from though? If she was from Bristol then the marriage would probably have been close to where she lived. Perhaps she moved to Cam with him after they married to be near where he worked and lived. Did he defini...

Re: John Bennnett c1818-1856 Cam

Hi Marilyn

I've no idea whether this is the one you were after but I found a record of a John Bennett marrying a Hannah Nicholas on 2nd April 1834 at "Temple, Bristol, Gloucester". This was online at the http://www.familysearch.org website.

Good luck.

Re: Old photographs of Dursley, Cam and Uley

Thanks for the suggestion Patricia. I do actually get hundreds of visitors to the site, although only a small percentage log in to the forum. I also get many photos sent to me regularly and have several thousand myself. Many of these do make their way on to the regular pages of the site but there is...

Re: Joseph Mitchell

The death of Joseph Walters Mitchell is certainly recorded in 1891 in the Dursley district but he's not recorded as being buried at St. Marks' in Dursley. It wouldn't have been at St. James' as burials had stopped there by then and the town cemetery wasn't opened until 1934. There is a possibility o...

Hi Sally

I know of a Lavinia Lois Denley who had a non-confirmist baptism in Dursley in 1875, father Ezra, mother Lavinia.

Re: Joseph Mitchell

Hello there The coffee tavern was opened on 1st December 1883 in Chapel Street, Cam due to the influence of the Temperance Movement which was set up to keep people away from the "evils of drink" and out of the pubs, of which there were many. Miss E.P. Winterbotham of Norman Hill was a lead...

Re: The Infirmary Littleworth

Hi Sarah There are actually at least three Littleworths in Gloucestershire, one in Chipping Camden, one in Amberley and the one I think you are referring to which was once a small area within Gloucester City Centre. It's out of the Dursley area but according to the Imperial Gazetteer of England and ...

Re: The Shipways of Dursley

There is an Eliza Shipway (aged 60) listed as an "Outdoor Pauper" obtaining relief from Dursley Union Workhouse in October 1896. By that time she'd been in receipt of help for 27 weeks.

Re: Workhouse Boulton Lane

Hi Patricia. I agree with you about the difficulties of life in those days compared to today. I have a copy of the Dursley Union Workhouse "Abstract of Accounts and List of Paupers" for October 1896 and looking through it you can get a picture of how people ended up there. Reasons include ...

Re: Daisy Phillips and Fredrick Maggs

In case you weren't aware, Mr Francillon was a well respected solicitor in Dursley and had a large house at the top of Bull Pitch (opposite the old Bull Inn). His office was near the entrance gates to the churchyard at the top of Long Street.

Re: Harris family Dursley

The Harris family were big landowners in the area in the 18th and 19th century. George Harris had a mill and also owned Rednock House and much land between there and the town centre and also in the valley in which the Lister factory was extended. Harris family land was sold off to both Lister's and ...

Re: Shops in Long Street, Parsonage Street and Silver Street

You're right, those were the days. I think the Wainwright's dairy was around the back in Prospect Place and the shop was on Parsonage Street, later demolished when the Castle Street junction was built. Kingham's hairdresser's is still there by the way.

Re: Surviving Dursley Pedersen cycles?

Thanks for that. It looks like I need to get hold of a copy of that list, it sounds like you've made a good job of restoring your four examples. We have a restored ladies' model in the Dursley Heritage Centre but I'm trying to get hold of a gents model at some point. They're pretty hard to track dow...

Re: Mawdsley's stories

Thanks for the recollections. If you went to the Mawdsley's site now you'd never guess there was once a factory there. The only thing left is the millpond, otherwise it's all new houses.
