Re: Webb/Elliott/Gibbon and Frape Families
Hello Jack I can confirm that St. James Church does not now hold much in the way of historical BMD records. As with many churches throughout the country these have been moved to record offices and archives for safekeeping. You could try Dursley Town Council who have records of the various plots for ...

Re: The old Manor House off Drake Lane
According to a Dursley Gazette of November 1886, Cam House is advertised as being let as a hunting lodge at 10 guineas a month by Mr F A Vincent. It had 12 rooms and stabling for 5 horses.

Re: US soldiers in Dursley prior to D-Day
Construction of the school building at Highfields began prior to the war but this ceased at the outbreak of hostilities. However it was finished to such an extent that it could be used for billetting the enlisted men which was what happened when the Americans arrived. After the war ended constructio...

Re: US soldiers in Dursley prior to D-Day
Hi there Thanks for the message. Most of the information I have relates to the 41st Evacuation Hospital which was based originally at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. They crossed the Atlantic on the Queen Mary, arriving in Gourock, Scotland. From there they went by train to Dursley, arriving on 22nd Nov...

Re: Changed Dursley
Thanks for the message Pete. Things have certainly changed in 20 years and the factory is a shadow of its former self - just about holding on to Dursley (although due to move out to Hardwicke). The training centre burnt down in 2004, see the news page on my site for December 2004. http://www.dursley...

Re: Old copies of the Dursley Gazette
I'm afraid not. Gazette's are on microfiche at Gloucester Archives with more recent copies held at the Gazette offices in Dursley (access restricted).

Re: US soldiers in Dursley prior to D-Day
Thanks for the memories. Do you recall the soldiers marching through the town as I've seen a few photos of them doing so? Also do you remember the American nurses being in Dursley? Being a medical detachment (two in fact - 41st and 67th Evacuation Hospitals) there were many nurses attached to these ...

Re: Champion's products?
I think you're right that a company in Cam bought the rights to Harrold's old products though I'm not sure what name they now operate under.

Re: Champion's products?
Harrold's isn't making ropes or belts in Dursley any more, although I understand the business may have been sold many years ago. I'm not sure where it moved to though.

Hello Patricia
It does make interesting reading. I actually have copies for a few years. If you let me know your grandfather's full name and the years you believe he was there I may be able to copy some of it and post here.
Best Wishes

Hello Beajaytee and Jeaw
I can confirm that this poem was definitely penned by Mr E.H. Kemp. It was written in October 1949 and sold for six pence with all proceeds going towards the cost of new curtains (£15) for the Tabernacle School Hall in Dursley.
Best Wishes, Andy

Hi Ken
Many thanks for the pictures, let's see whether anyone recognises anything from them!
One thing, if you add an image could you plesae use jpg format (rather than tif). TIF images don't display properly on the forum so I have to manually convert them and repost.
Thanks
Andy

Re: Ferney Hill House
Many thanks for the additional information. You're right about the Major living there, his name was spelt 'Parbury'. The house is once again a private residence and very well looked after, as are the gardens. The person who owns it now runs a company which specialises in property and estate renovati...
