Horse trough on Uley road!

There used to be a horse trough next to the "Carpenter's Arms" on Uley road. Was fed by pure spring water running off the bankside; as children used to often quench our thirst there. Just wondered if it was still there!!

Re: Films at the Chantry Centre

Thanks Andy, I used to go to Saturday morning pictures when I lived on Highfields Approach! Later I remember a neighbour, Pauline Richings, as a cashier at the "Odeon". Also attended the "Regal when home on leave!!

Films at the Chantry Centre

I see they are going to start showing films at the Chantry Centre (used to be known as the Lister's Club). I wondered when Dursley lost the two cinemas, the Odeon and the Regal?

Re: Pub tales

Thanks Andy, Unfortunately I was officially under age when I left Dursley to join the army! My dad was the steward at the Lister's club so I didn't get to any of the pubs (once again officially). Called into most of them when on leave!

Re: Pub tales

Disappointed to see no mention of the "Carpenter's Arms" on Uley road or the "New Inn" on Woodmancote! Sad to hear "The King's Head" is closing!

Scouts groups

A little disappointed to find that there is no mention of another scout group other than !st Dursley group1 I take nothing away from their history of being one of the oldest groups in the Country! However I was a member of 3rd.Dursley (St.James) scout group in the early fifties. It was run from the ...

Re: US soldiers in Dursley prior to D-Day

Highfields school - there was no Highfields school - not sure whether this was the secondary modern which I wasn't sure was
in existence during the war? At my age at the time I was only aware of the Council and Church of England schools!

Re: US soldiers in Dursley prior to D-Day

As I previously posted, as a 5/6 year old I lived close to the fields where the Americans had there tents!! Apart from two americans who threatened to throw me in the brook, my only recollecton is them throwing packets of cigarettes to us when they had run out of "candy"!! As a non-smoker ...

Re: Cam Bulldogs A F C

I know Roly Jones, an apprentice at Lister's and Roy Hancock from Dursley both played for the Bulldogs about 52/53. I managed a couple of games for the second eleven. I remember training under floodlights!!

Re: Shops in Long Street, Parsonage Street and Silver Street

I've lost all memory of the street names except Long Street where I used to live. However there are some shops I remember which don't seem to have made a mention :-the L.C.M. (London Central Meat Co.), where I worked as a butcher's boy in the early 50's, Ferris's Cake shop where I used to get the bu...

Re: Information - Heslop

Hello again, You've certainly roused some memories! Tony Pratt was a prefect at the Grammar school and also in 3rd Dursley Scouts at the same time as myself albeit the older vessel! I also was at the same school as Carson Chown and, indeed, Tony broke up a fight between myself and Carson!! Happy day...
