Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

No, I can't remember the cottage. Although I used to play in the castle I never went any further, I lived the other end of town. Looking at the last map you posted I noticed you indicated Fred Bailey's house my wife's uncle is Michael Bailey. We did ask him about a month ago if he knew anything abou...

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

Yesterday my wife was speaking to a friend who used to play in the castle when he was a boy about 55 yrs ago. I had previously printed off Andy's photos which she showed him. He loved the pics and refered to the OS map on page two and said that there was a tunnel running under the length of the wall...

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

Something still bothers me about the tower/castle's age. Have been down there today to have a good look around at the end of the wall furthest from the tower there is a very very old tree growing on top of the wall this means the wall was built before the tree started growing. On one of Andy's previ...

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

Yes you could be right Rich. It looked to me that there was another building previously joined to the tower with the inside white washed then demolished but I can't remember this, Dave

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

Well done yet again Andy, could not believe my eyes when I saw this latest photo it brings back so many memories of my childhood and the fun times we had in there. Like I said in my earlier posts the tower was defo square. On one of your earlier photos it does show a round smaller building to the le...

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

Hi Ken. In one of your comments about the castle you said there used to be an arch leading to the castle. If you go to page 3 of this forum look at the photo that Andy posted. You can just see the arch, Dave.

Re: Travelling on the branch

Andy, I do remember on quite a few occasions my mother taking me down to the station at Lister's and getting our tickets to go to Gloucester. It seemed to take forever but great fun. I guess Ernie was the driver then. Dave

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

Hi Ken, do you know if the tower/castle was still standing after the house was demolished and did you ever go in the tower? Also do you know when the new estate was started?

Re: Who remembers any of the railway staff?

Andy, I used to live at Highfields when I was a boy. Walking home from school many days I would walk along Second Avenue with a Mister Carpenter, a very tall man with a long coat. He was black as soot and always carried a can with a handle, he told me he was a train driver. Many years later I used t...

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

Rich, yes I think you're right they just made it all one level so the tower formed the corner of the wall. Yes the steps were made from stone, as you went in the steps were far right. If only we could give it a good makeover the steps are probably still there buried under rubble. I never, ever thoug...

Re: Norman Hill House, Cam

Hi Rich, yes sorry I missed you yesterday. I have been to the castle today and after looking more closely at the end of the wall where the bit sticks out then pulling back some of the ivy I could see what remains of the castle I think. It's not quite so big as I remember but it's there. I am so plea...
